Late morning train  ride to Zermatt.

     Zermatt in the background.  After arriving at 1400 I headed up to the Trift mountain hut.  A 737m ascend!

   Higher and higher.  Zermatt keeps shrinking.  going deeper into the Trift valley.

     On the way up the Trift valley I rested at the Edelweiss hut, which can be seen on the right.  You can also see how the trail contours along the side of the valley.

     Finally at the Trift mountain hut.  Although it is called Hotel du Trift it is much less accomodations than a hotel.  No hot water and electricity cuts-off at 2200.  Supplies are brought up by helicopter.  One thing this place did not lack was beer.

     Each of the three German friends around the table drank 3 liters of beer.  They were up and early the next morning ready to hike.  The Canadian woman in from of me climbed a 3.5 km mountain in Africa.
